Rond Point Projects

Rond Point Projects

Three years ago, much encouraged by her experience at the RLBQ gallery, Camille Videcoq, joined by Marie Gabreau, created Rond Point Projects, an association whose activities are focused on curatorial practices. It is also at this moment that public funders are reckoning that there are too many exhibition venues in Marseille, and that the SMP, Buy Sellf and soon RLBQ associative galleries will be closing, while others are opening, private this time, such as the GAD run by Arnaud Deschin, and Didier Gourvennec Ogor’s place. The project to reorganize the Friche is also monopolizing people’s minds at the same time.

Entrée Principale, the system of residencies designed for exhibition curators set up by Rond Point Projects stands out with a signposted circuit often connected with the activity of a FRAC (Regional Contemporary Art Collection) or an art centre, because it is freed from the obligation to exhibit, because it offers a research space for a year, and because it encourages real encounters with art people and artists in the territory. Since it opened in 2010, the project has seen an abundance of candidacies because of this specific feature. Residents are chosen on the basis of their research theme, and not simply because of their CV, for it is a matter of inviting artists from the Marseille region to appropriate a proposition which has to be very precise at the same time as being quite open, in order to make it possible to overlap practices, mix generations and, above all, for the resident, not get lost in the complexity of the terrain. At each session its form is produced, and its choices set forth. In 2012, Vincent Romagny, who had come to work on the production of a book about artists’ archives, turned things around and confronted artists’ practices with their referent texts. Thus appeared Sources, the first publication of Immixtion Books, which complements the activity of Rond Point Projects with a publishing dimension. This produces novel encounters between Cécile Dauchez, Colin Champsaur, Michèle Sylvander, Ymane Fakhir, Denis Prisset, Stéphane Le Mercier, Yumi Han, Jean-Baptiste Sauvage, Hayan Kam Nakache and Crystof Yvoré. With each artist’s portfolio, the pleasure of an ad hoc paper.

In 2013, Anna Colin launched the term “schizophony” which each artist fuels in a very particular way [1] at the regular meetings where documents change hands and are shared. Here too there are amazing meetings between performance artists, those involved with writing, sound and music, and visual artists turned more towards sculpture like Rémi Bragard and Fouad Bouchoucha.

Marseille Expos has also invited Camille Videcoq to assume the curatorship of her 2013 show at the Galeries Lafayette; her proposal: “Vous aussi vous avez l’air conditionné” takes this very specific space into consideration with veritable in situ ideas such as the one presented by Chourouk Hriech, who lives and works in Marseille, but who is paradoxically more visible internationally than in her own country.

Rond Point Projects is actually a sort of platform of reflection which associates the two above-mentioned curators with Luc Jeand’heur, multi-facetted writer, and Luc Lacortiglia, an architect and collector, to jostle networks that are too comfortably established, invent new connections, and afford the luxury of inviting people at home. Everyone has assembled for the European Capital of Culture year under the tutelary figure of John Brinckerhoff Jackson to sign The Stranger’s Path, a double-barrelled publishing series with, on the one hand, a visual invitation made to an artist and, on the other, an organization of texts, a kind of emanation from a thought laboratory.
